What struck me most wasn't the disagreement itself but how easily public debates become contests over credibility rather than opportunities for genuine inquiry. Science advances through rigorous criticism, but criticism is most productive when it helps clarify evidence rather than reinforcing identities. Strong claims deserve strong scrutiny, regardless of who makes them, yet intellectual humility is equally important because our models are always provisional. The most valuable conversations are the ones that leave everyone with a more refined understanding rather than simply a declared winner.

I don’t know Layne, but there’s plenty like him so I saved you paragraph starting with “Skepticism can easily slide into dismissal” because it summarizes it so perfect.

You may be using Dave Asprey as an example for others in this space, but as for him specifically I think you misunderstand him. He talks often about the same things you do. About unconscious patterns and needing to get past them in order to build a life of love and purpose. He doesn’t follow your prior “pattern of chronic overdrive”, but rather wants to maximize results in minimal time so you have time and energy to spend with loved ones and your purpose. Like many of the best “healers”, he has suffered mentally and physically himself, and shares what he’s learned about how to turn it around. I’m sure if you asked him (and thousands who have read his books etc), they would object to your statement that he is not “turning the wound into something that actually helps another human being”. I’m not saying the guy is perfect; he is a money-making machine. But I don’t believe he just shills products he doesn’t believe in, and the vast majority of his advice is free.

I have a feeling that if you two did an conversation today you would line up on many things. That's an conversation would watch!

Thank you Sue. Yes, it is hard writing things like this from past experience. It has been several years since I spent time with any of his work. I became tunred off by him and the industry as a whole around COVID. We all grow. We all learn. We all evolve. I am sure he is wonderful and dysfunctional in the same ways all of us are.

Jade this is a lovely exploration of the IFS concept of parts – both men are completely blended with their little child protector parts.
