Science Explained the Soul and Doesn't Realize
A medium in a Greenville bar said things he could not have known. Two physicists who cannot stand each other MAY have accidentally explained how.

Awhile back my girlfriend took me to see a medium.
I want you to understand the mood I walked in with. I was mildly curious. Somewhat open, at least that is what I told myself. I had the specific, slightly annoyed patience of a man who has agreed to something for someone else and has already decided what he is going to find. That being said, I have spent the last seven years or so reading about theories of consciousness, quantum coherence, and the metaphysical mumbo jumbo one wades through in my area of study. Most of those claims do not survive ten minutes of honest questioning. I assumed this one would be more of the same.
The room held somewhere north of fifty people. It was an old bar in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. Sticky tables, bad lighting, and the smell of stale beer. The Medium stood at the front of the room on a small stage with no notes.
Not even a few minutes in, he stops and says, “I’m getting the number eleven. This is a sudden death. A young boy. Did anyone in here lose an eleven-year-old boy?”
A couple in the back raised their hands.
I was taken aback. I remember thinking, alright, is this some type of cheap trick? In a room this size…. fifty people, most of them here because somebody died. Somebody is going to fit. Right?
But that was pretty specific.
Then he started describing the boy.
Not the way you describe a boy in general. The way you describe a very specific one. Small things. Particular things. The kind of detail that has no value as a guess, because there is no version of the guess that pays off.
I am not going to pretend I can quote it. I was not taking notes, and this is exactly the point in a story like this where people polish the details until they shine. What I remember is that he brought up a project the boy’s father had been working on at home, and that the boy had loved being around it. Not a category of thing. That thing.
He kept going. He moved to another person and did it again. And another. For the rest of the night. He was specific, intentional and accurate, judging from the way the people he was engaging with were reacting.
At first I sat there with my arms crossed, running the debunk in real time. By the end I was leaning forward, convinced he was doing something real and questioning what it was.
His name is Travis Holp. He goes by Warrior Unicorn, which tells you something about how seriously he takes himself, which is to say not very, which is one of the reasons I ended up liking him.
And I am now convinced he was doing something remarkable. I just am not ready to say he is talking to spirits.
I ran every debunk I had, in that room and for weeks after. That he looked people up beforehand, which fails because you cannot memorize a room and he did not know which of fifty he was going to land on. That it was cold reading, which is genuinely powerful and explains a great deal of mediumship, and which gets you toward a shape rather than to the thing only two people in the world knew. And the sophisticated one, which has a formal name in the research literature: the super-psi hypothesis, or living-agent psi. Nobody is talking to the dead at all, the medium is simply reading the living.
That last one held me for a while, until I noticed it explains every possible outcome, which makes it less rigorous than what it is competing with rather than more. Nothing could ever count against it.
The question I actually left with
Here is the thing. I did not walk out of that bar wondering whether Travis is psychic.
I walked out wondering whether there is a soul. And if there is, what it is made of.
Most people leave a night like that, file it under nice or nonsense, and go to work in the morning. I do not get to do that. I study personal transformation for a living. I am also getting my PhD in transpersonal psychology, with a concentration in consciousness, personal transformation, and psychedelics. This is my world. It is literally what I am paid to think about.
So I went and did the work. Months of it.
And what I found is that the pieces of a real, physical, testable account of a soul MAY already be sitting in the published literature. Two of them come from scientists who do not agree with each other and who, as far as I can tell, have never put their work together. Neither of them is trying to explain a soul. One is a physicist arguing about the vacuum. The other is a biologist arguing about brain waves.
Put their work next to each other and I think something falls out that could get close to an explanation.
The claim, all at once
I am going to state the whole thing right now, before I show you any of the parts. If it sounds like too much, good. Then you will know what I am actually claiming, and you can watch me try to earn it.
There is a field underneath everything, and it holds every possibility there is.
A narrow band of it comes down and becomes you. Not the whole thing. A band.
While you are alive, your own field and that field meet, and the meeting is your consciousness. Not the field. Not the meat. The meeting.
Everything you live gets written back into that field, because there is nowhere else for it to go.
When you die, what returns is not what came out. It is what came out plus everything that happened to it.
And the next time a band comes down, it comes down carrying what the last one learned.
That is what I think a soul could be. Not a ghost that was living in your chest and flies off at the end. A pattern in a field that keeps going out and coming back, a little different every time.
Now let me show you why I think this could be the shape of a viable hypothesis.
Every square inch holds the orchestra
Go sit in a concert hall. Eighty musicians, every instrument going at once.
Now pick any single square inch of air in that room. Any one. The cheap seats, the ceiling, six inches above the conductor’s head.
That square inch contains the entire orchestra.
Not a slice of it. All of it, at once, whole. That is not a poetic way of putting it, it is why one microphone can record a symphony.
The field works like the air in that room. Not somewhere. Not far away. Not a place you go when you die or a library you have to be worthy to enter. Everywhere at once, and every part of it containing the whole thing.
Physicists have a name for the deepest layer of this. The zero-point field (ZPF), the energy that remains in empty space after you have removed everything else. That part is not fringe. Empty space is not empty. It hums.
You are standing in it right now, the way you are standing in air.
You are an instrument
An instrument does not create sound out of nothing. It selects.
Move the same air past a trumpet and past a flute and you get two entirely different worlds. Nothing about the air changed. Everything about what became audible changed. The instrument decides what gets to sound and what stays silent.
That is what a brain and a body are. Not a generator. A selector. Out of everything the field carries, your particular build lets a narrow band through, and that band is your experience of being alive.
Now the part every musician already knows.
No two instruments sound the same. Two violins, same maker, same wood, same plan, built in the same month, do not have the same voice. Nobody fully knows why. Some of it is grain, some of it is thickness, some of it is a hundred small accidents in the making. Hand them to a player and she will tell you instantly which is which.
That is what I have been calling essential nature. Not a personality assigned to you at birth. A build. You are shaped in a way nothing else has ever been shaped, and that shape decides what you can resonate with, what comes easy, what you cannot hear at all, and what you sound like when life leans on you.
You did not earn it and you did not pick it. It is what you were handed to play.
The note is not the string
Pluck a string.
Where is the note?
It is not in the string. A string sitting there is silent, and if you take it off the instrument and hold it in your hand it stays silent no matter what you do to it. It is not in the pluck either. Your finger has no music in it.
The note only exists in the meeting. A third thing, that is neither of the two things that made it, and that did not exist anywhere in the universe until those two things met.
That may be exactly what you are.
There is a field you did not make and do not control. There is an instrument, which is your body and your brain and everything that has ever happened to it. And there is a life happening to you constantly, plucking, striking, bowing, hammering. Your consciousness is not the field and it is not the body. It is the note.
And notice what this does to something you have been told a hundred times, which is that your beliefs come from your experiences.
They do not. Not exactly.
The event is the pluck. Your build is the instrument. The belief is what sounds. Which is why two children can live through the same house and come out playing completely different music, and why the thing that broke one of them is the thing that tuned the other. The event never determined the note. It only supplied the energy.
And this is a real machine
What I just described is not a nice analogy I built to make you feel something. It is a real physical structure, there is a technology that runs on exactly it, and it has been sitting in physics labs since 1948.
It is called a hologram.
You make one by splitting a single beam of light in two. Half goes straight to a photographic plate. Half goes out, strikes the object, and comes back carrying its shape. Neither half records anything on its own, and what the plate ends up storing is not a picture at all. It is a record of how two waves met.
Same structure as the note. But a hologram also does something that sounds impossible until you have seen it. Cut the plate in half and throw half away. You do not get half a picture. You get the whole picture, at lower resolution. Cut it again, whole picture, blurrier. The information is not stored in one place. It is stored in the pattern, and the pattern is everywhere on the plate at once.
Which is the same thing as the square inch of air holding the orchestra.
So you are not a fragment of the source field. You are not a spark chipped off a fire or a drop taken out of an ocean or a piece of God wandering around looking for the rest of itself. Every one of those images smuggles in the same lie, which is that you are missing something.
You are all of it, at your resolution.
I am not the first person to point at holography as a model for reality. David Bohm, one of the more serious physicists of the last century, described what he called the implicate order, in which the whole is enfolded in every part. Karl Pribram argued the brain itself works holographically. If you were alive in the eighties you heard about all of this. What neither of them did, as far as I can find, is say what makes one part of that enfolded whole a person, or what happens to that person when the body stops.
One trap to fence off. There is a completely separate idea in physics also called the holographic principle, out of black hole thermodynamics. Different concept, same word, no relation. I am not blending them.
The first man, and where experience comes from
Joachim Keppler is a German physicist, and he is trying to solve the problem everybody else steps around.
It is called the hard problem of consciousness, and it goes like this. You can map every neuron. You can trace every signal. You can predict exactly which cells fire when someone sees red. And you still have not explained why there is something it is like to see red. Why there is an experience at all, instead of just processing happening in the dark. A calculator processes. Nobody thinks it has a mind.
The standard answer is that experience somehow emerges once the processing gets complicated enough. Keppler thinks that is not an answer, and I agree with him. Complexity explains behavior. It has never explained why anything is felt.
So he turns the problem upside down.
What if the felt qualities are already out there?
His proposal is that the zero-point field is not just a floor of energy but the carrier of the entire range of phenomenal qualities. Every possible shade of red, every possible tone, every possible flavor of grief, present in the field the way every possible note is present in the air of a concert hall. Not as an experience anybody is having. As a range that is available.
On this account the brain does not manufacture experience. It selects it. A particular pattern of brain activity resonates with a particular set of modes in the field, amplifies them, and what you get is the experience of that moment. The redness was never made in your head. Your head tuned to it.
That is what he named TRAZE, in a 2024 paper in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
Keppler has never once said what TRAZE stands for. Not in that paper, not anywhere. Every expansion you find online is somebody’s reconstruction. What he actually wrote is that phenomenal states arise through resonant amplification of zero-point modes. That is his sentence and I am not going to improve on it.
He also does not leave the coupling vague, which I respect, because vagueness is where this subject usually goes to die. He points at the cortical microcolumn, the small repeating unit the brain’s cortex is built out of, and at glutamate, the brain’s main excitatory transmitter, as the molecular site where the coupling happens. And he argues it only works when the brain is in a very particular dynamical state, poised right at the edge between order and chaos, which neuroscientists call criticality and which the brain demonstrably does sit at.
What his theory buys you: an answer to why there is experience at all. The qualities do not have to be conjured out of meat, because they were never absent.
What it does not buy you: anything about you. Keppler explains how a conscious state gets picked up. He does not explain why the states hang together into a single unbroken experience, and he does not explain why that experience belongs to one particular person and not to the room. Hold that thought.
The second man, and why it all feels like one thing
Johnjoe McFadden is a British molecular biologist, and he is solving a completely different problem. His is called the binding problem, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.
Right now you are having one experience. The color of this screen, the sound in the room, the feeling of whatever you are sitting on, some background hum of mood. One experience, all at once, seamless.
Your brain is not doing that.
Color is processed in one region. Motion in another, physically separate. Shape somewhere else. Sound in an entirely different lobe. These regions are millimeters to centimeters apart, they run on different timescales, and there is no place in the brain where it all comes together. Neuroscientists have looked. There is no screen, no final theater, no cell that receives the finished picture. The parts never physically meet.
So how do you get one experience out of a system that never assembles one?
That is the binding problem, and it is not a fringe concern. It is one of the central unsolved questions in mainstream neuroscience, argued about by people who think consciousness is entirely a brain product.
McFadden’s answer is elegant.
Neurons are separate. The field they make is not.
Every firing neuron generates an electromagnetic field. And here is the part that matters: those fields do not sit side by side as separate things. There is only one electromagnetic field. Every neuron in your skull is a source contributing to it, simultaneously, right now. Whatever is happening in the visual cortex and whatever is happening in the auditory cortex are already combined in it, automatically, with nothing needing to travel anywhere to do the combining.
So the unity of your experience is not a puzzle the brain has to solve. It is a property the field already has. His theory is called CEMI, for Conscious Electromagnetic Information, and his claim is that this field is not a byproduct of thinking. It is the thinking.
And here is the part that keeps it from being philosophy. If the field were just exhaust, it could not matter. So does the brain’s own field push back on the neurons that made it?
Yes. And this one has been tested.
In 2019 a team published a study in the Journal of Physiology on slices of hippocampus. They made a complete cut through the tissue, physically separating it, with a gap of about 400 micrometers. No neurons crossing. No contact at all. And the wave of activity kept going, jumping the gap at about a tenth of a meter per second and carrying on the other side. They ruled out chemical synapses. They ruled out gap junctions. Then they applied an opposing electric field, and the transmission stopped, by more than ninety-five percent.
Nothing crossed that gap except the field. The field was doing the work.
What his theory provides: an answer to why experience is unified, and evidence that the brain’s field is causal rather than decorative.
What it does not explain: the hard problem. And a worse…. there are electromagnetic fields all over the universe. Your toaster has one. If consciousness is just a field carrying integrated information, what makes the one in your skull so special? McFadden’s answer is roughly that the brain’s field is complex enough and integrated enough. That is not an answer. It is a place where an answer should go.
Each one’s hole is the other one’s answer
Now put them side by side, which as far as I can find nobody has done, partly because these two men do not agree.
In 2021 Keppler published a paper whose title gives away the whole argument: building blocks for the development of a self-consistent electromagnetic field theory of consciousness. The word doing the work is self-consistent. His position is that field theories like McFadden’s are not explanatory, and cannot be, unless they are anchored to the zero-point field.
He is right that CEMI has a hole. But so does his own theory.
Keppler explains why there is experience, and cannot tell you why it is unified or why it is yours.
McFadden explains why it is unified and yours, and cannot tell you why there is experience at all, or why his field and not the toaster’s.
But look at what happens when you lay one over the other.
The source field carries the range of what can be felt. The brain’s field is a single, unified, local, causally active object that is unlike a toaster’s in one specific way: it is built to resonate. Structured, rhythmic, poised at criticality, running on the exact molecular machinery Keppler says does the coupling.
So the criterion McFadden was missing is not complexity. It is coupling. The conscious fields are the ones that can be set ringing by what is already in the source field. Your toaster makes a field and cannot resonate with anything, the way a brick in a concert hall is not an instrument.
And the individuality Keppler was missing comes free, because the local field is not generic. It is generated by your particular architecture, carrying your particular history, and no two of those have ever been the same.
Neither man gets to this alone. It only appears in the overlap.
And if the details are wrong, the shape still holds
One more thing before I build on this, because I want to be honest about how much weight the specifics can carry.
It might not be the electromagnetic field. McFadden picked electromagnetism because it is the field we can measure through a skull with equipment we already own. If it turns out the relevant coupling runs through some other field, the argument does not collapse. It relocates.
It might not be glutamate. Keppler needs a molecular site where the coupling happens and he nominated the most abundant excitatory transmitter in the cortex. Reasonable. Also replaceable. If it is a different molecule, or a structure rather than a molecule, the theory survives the swap.
It might not be cortical microcolumns. Same logic.
What I am suggesting does not live in any of those details. It lives in the architecture:
A universal field that holds what can be experienced. A local field, built to resonate with it. The two meeting and producing a third thing that was in neither. And that third thing not being erased.
Every one of those four can be wrong in its particulars and right in its shape. That is the difference between a theory and a guess, and it is also the reason I am willing to put my name on this while cheerfully admitting I cannot name the molecule.
The mechanism, one step at a time
I have been handing you metaphors. Now I want to walk the actual machinery, and grade every step as I go. A chain is worth exactly what its weakest link is worth, and you deserve to know which link that is instead of having to go find it yourself.
Step one. You are running a real field. Not in dispute.
Every thought you have is an electrical event. Ions moving across cell membranes, millions at a time. Every electrical event produces an electromagnetic field. Your brain’s field is strong enough and organized enough to be read from outside your skull, straight through the bone. That is what an EEG does, and it is sitting in hospitals right now diagnosing people. This is not a theory anyone argues about. It is equipment.
Step two. There is a field underneath everything. Also not in dispute.
Empty space is not empty. Quantum field theory says every field has a lowest possible energy state, and even at that floor it still trembles. That floor is the zero-point field.
We know it is there because we can measure what it does. Put two uncharged metal plates very close together in a vacuum and they drift toward each other, because there is less field between them than around them. That is the Casimir effect, and it has been measured in a lab. The energy levels of a hydrogen atom sit slightly off from where the simple math says they should, and the standard explanation is the vacuum jostling the electron. That is the Lamb shift, and it won a Nobel Prize. Neither of these is fringe. Both are in graduate textbooks.
Hold on to one detail, because it comes back to bite me. Physicists describe the vacuum as the ground state. The same everywhere, in every direction, for everyone.
Step three. Two fields overlapping produce something that was in neither. Not in dispute.
Physicists call it superposition, and I gave it to you already with the plucked string. Here is the part I left out. In ordinary conditions, waves pass straight through each other and come out the far side unchanged. Cross two flashlight beams and you do not get a permanent third beam. The pattern exists while they overlap, and then it is over.
So the pattern is real, and it is entirely dependent. Not a free-standing object that wandered off on its own. It exists while both are running and nowhere else. Which is exactly what this model wants while you are alive, and exactly why the experience ends when the body does.
Which means this whole model lives or dies on one question. What makes the pattern last?
Step four. How a wave pattern becomes permanent. Real physics, and this is where I start reaching.
There are two ways, and both are real.
The first is recording, which is the hologram I already described. And notice what it requires: a medium that can be physically altered. The plate remembers because the emulsion changes. No changeable medium, no memory. Remember that.
The second is nonlinear mixing, and this one is stranger and much closer to what I need. In most materials, waves ignore each other. But in certain materials, at high enough intensity, two waves genuinely interact and produce a brand new wave, at a brand new frequency, that did not exist before and does not vanish when they separate. It is called sum-frequency generation. Peter Franken demonstrated it in 1961, and the field it opened won Nicolaas Bloembergen a share of the Nobel Prize in 1981.
You have probably held one in your hand. A green laser pointer contains an infrared laser you cannot see, firing into a small crystal that doubles the frequency and hands you green light out the other side. Two waves in. A genuinely new thing out.
And here is the part almost nobody knows. The vacuum itself is nonlinear. Heisenberg and Hans Euler predicted in 1936 that light should be able to scatter off other light in empty space, which cannot happen if the vacuum is a passive stage. In 2017 the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider reported seeing it. Push empty space hard enough and it pushes back.
Now the honest part, and it is not small.
The vacuum only behaves that way near something called the Schwinger limit, which is around a billion billion volts per meter. The electric fields your brain produces are somewhere in the neighborhood of one volt per meter. That is a gap of roughly eighteen orders of magnitude. A hundred million billion times too weak.
So if you are asking whether a thought can drive the vacuum the way a laser drives a crystal, the honest answer on the numbers is no. Not close. Not in the same postal code as close.
That is a problem with my model and I am putting it in the middle of my own article rather than waiting for a physicist to find it. Everything after this you should read with that number in your hand.
There is a third way, and it is the one I have come to think is most likely.
Some patterns persist because of their shape rather than because a medium was altered. Physicists call them solitons and topological defects. A soliton holds its form indefinitely instead of spreading out. A topological defect is stable because you cannot smoothly undo it without tearing the field it lives in. Nothing had to be written down anywhere. The structure is protected by its own geometry.
Nobody has proposed a version of that at the scale of a person, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. But it is the only one of the three that does not immediately collide with what the vacuum is, and if I had to bet on where the answer eventually comes from, I would bet there.
Step five. Nothing is ever truly erased. Real, and constantly misquoted.
I have to be careful here, because there are two different conservation laws and nearly everyone writing about this mashes them together.
Energy is neither created nor destroyed. True. Also useless to me. When you die, the energy in your body disperses as heat into a room. Heat is not you. Nobody has ever been comforted by the first law of thermodynamics, and they were right not to be.
The law I actually need is a different one. Quantum mechanics says information is conserved. Burn a book and the information in it is not gone. It is in the photons and the smoke and the ash, scrambled past any hope of reading, but not deleted. Physicists call this unitarity, and they take it so seriously that the question of whether black holes violate it has been the central argument in theoretical physics for half a century. Stephen Hawking bet publicly that information is destroyed, and conceded the bet in 2004.
This is the strongest ground I stand on in this entire article. Modern physics genuinely does say that nothing which happens is erased from the universe.
And I have to tell you exactly what it does not say. It says the information survives in the total state of the universe. It does not say it stays organized. It does not say it can ever be read back. And it does not say it lives in the vacuum in particular. Scrambled and preserved is not the same as filed and retrievable.
And there is a stronger version of that, which I did not know until I went looking.
Physics does not only say information is preserved in the abstract. It says the world is constantly recording itself, mechanically, whether anyone is watching or not. Every time anything interacts with anything, the second thing ends up holding information about the state of the first. That is called decoherence, and it is the standard explanation for why the world looks solid and classical instead of smeared and quantum.
And it goes further than that. The physicist Wojciech Zurek showed that the environment does not merely absorb that information. It makes redundant copies of it, scattered across many independent fragments of the world.
Here is why that matters. On this account, the reason you and I can look at the same chair and agree it is a chair is that the environment made many copies of the information about it and we each intercepted a different one. Objective reality is the redundancy of the record.
So a universe that records everything, constantly and redundantly, is not my idea. It is the mainstream account of why anything is objective at all.
Step six. Mine, and the place where I run out of physics.
My claim is that the zero-point field is not only a floor of energy. It is an information field. What happens here is written there, and it stays.
Every tradition that ever described a hall of records, a book of life, an Akashic record, was pointing at that. I am not embarrassed by the company. I think they may have been describing a real feature of reality with the only vocabulary anyone had at the time.
But I told you two paragraphs ago what a recording requires, so let me hold myself to it. A photographic plate remembers because the emulsion changes. What, in the vacuum, changes?
I do not know.
That is the hole. Standard physics says the vacuum is the ground state, identical everywhere for everyone, and a ground state that stored your history would no longer be a ground state. I am asking the vacuum to do something the current description of the vacuum does not allow.
I would rather hand you that sentence myself than have you find it on your own. If this model is ever going to be worth anything, that is the step somebody has to solve. And it is not going to get solved by me writing about it more confidently.
And let me be straighter than I have been, because I handed you two ways a pattern can last and I have now quietly watched both of them fail.
Nonlinear mixing needs field strengths eighteen orders of magnitude past anything a brain produces. Recording needs a medium that can be altered, and the vacuum is a ground state, which is precisely a thing with nothing available to alter. So the honest scoreboard on the question I said this model lives or dies on, what makes the pattern last, is that I do not have an answer. Not a weak one. None.
Here is why I am still writing this anyway.
Every other link in the chain is either established or seriously argued by credentialed people. That the brain runs a real field is not in question. That two fields meeting produce something in neither is not in question. That information is conserved is not in question. What is missing is one step, and it is a step about the vacuum, which is the least understood object in physics and the one whose description has been rewritten more often than anything else on that list.
A missing mechanism is not the same as a refuted one. It is also not the same as a working one. Hold this as an architecture waiting on a mechanism, not as a finished machine.
Only a band comes down
One correction before we go further, because it matters and people get it wrong in both directions.
The whole soul does not incarnate.
An instrument does not play the whole air. A flute has a range. Below it and above it, the music is still there and the flute simply cannot touch it. That is not a defect. That is what having a shape means.
So whatever you are, this life is not all of it. A band came down. One instrument’s worth. Which is why you can feel, at the same time, that you are small and that there is something much larger you belong to, and why both of those feelings are accurate.
It also means the thing that persists is bigger than the thing that showed up. You are the part of it that is currently being played.
Which means you have a higher self, and it is not what you were told
Follow that one more step, because it explains something people have been describing for thousands of years without a mechanism.
If only a band came down, then the rest of it did not go anywhere. It is not watching from above. It is not waiting somewhere for you to earn it. It is simply the part of you that is not currently being played.
That would be your higher self.
Not a wiser being who lives upstairs and occasionally takes your call. Not a separate entity at all. The rest of the same pattern. Same soul, wider range, most of it out of reach of the instrument you are currently holding.
And higher is honestly a bad word for it, because it smuggles in a moral ranking that is not there. It is not better than you and it is not more virtuous than you. It is wider than you. It has more range. That is the whole difference.
Which explains why guidance feels the way it does.
When something arrives from that direction it does not sound like your own thinking, because it is not coming from the identity you built here. It does not arrive as an argument assembled out of parts. It arrives whole. You did not work it out. It showed up, complete, and usually inconvenient.
It also explains why it is intermittent, which is the part that frustrates everybody.
You are not being ignored. You are muted.
On a piano there is a strip of felt resting against every string, and its entire job is to stop that string from ringing. Press the sustain pedal and every one of them lifts off at once, and the strings go free.
You have those too. A fixed identity. A set of learned filters. A self that has to stay consistent to survive being around other people. Every one of them a pad resting on a string, narrowing what you can ring with. That is not a flaw. It is what having a working personality costs.
And it is exactly why the moments people report are the moments they report. In nature. Half asleep. Exhausted past the point of managing yourself. In grief, when the identity you were defending has already been knocked down. In meditation, in prayer, on a psychedelic. Every one of those is the same event described differently: the felt lifts, and the band widens for a while.
You were not reaching up to something else. You were ringing with more of what you already are.
Which, if you want it in one line, is this. You are not a small thing trying to contact a big thing. You are the part of a big thing that is currently in a body.
What death actually takes
So now the question the whole article has been walking toward.
If you are the note, and the note needs an instrument, then when the instrument is gone, what is left?
Two things happen at death, and we almost always talk about only one of them.
The first is obvious. The playing stops. The instrument is gone. No more plucking, no more sounding, no more new music. That is real and I am not going to soften it. Something genuinely ends.
But here is the second thing, and nobody says it.
Every note you ever sounded went into the air.
And the air is not a container that empties out. The air was the field, the same field, the one that holds the whole orchestra in every square inch. Every note you played went into the only medium there is. There is no second location for it to have gone to instead.
So death takes the instrument. It does not take the music.
And this is the sentence I would want carved somewhere. You were never the instrument. The instrument was on loan and it was always going back. You were what happened when the field met it. You were the sound.
That is what a soul is in this model. Not a passenger who was riding around inside your body and climbed out at the end. The music that actually got played, held in the only place music can be held.
And now I can say the part I have been building toward, in the plainest way I know how.
The band that came down and became you was never blank. It was your old soul. Whatever had already been played, carried forward as a tuning.
Then you got a body and a life, and out of that you built an identity. Every event, every story you told yourself about it, every emotion that set the story. That identity runs as a field of its own, and it is not the same as the band you arrived with. It is new. It is the part that is genuinely yours to make.
And those two overlap. The old soul you came in carrying, and the new identity you built here. They meet the way any two fields meet, and the meeting makes a third thing that was in neither. That third thing is what you have been calling yourself all your life.
Then the body stops. And here is the move.
It all goes back, and it goes back integrated. Not the old soul returned unchanged, with a life stapled to the back of it. The two of them merged into one pattern that is not quite either. What comes out is what went in, plus what happened to it, fused.
So the thing that persists is not a record of you. It is an evolved version of what was already there. The old thing became a new thing. And when a band comes down again, it comes down as that.
Old thing into new thing, and the new thing into the next old thing, without an obvious end to it.
The children who arrive already finished
Which brings me to the part of this I did not expect to end up taking seriously.
It has been studied for fifty years at a real university by real psychiatrists.
Ian Stevenson at the University of Virginia spent his career documenting young children who report memories of a previous life. Not a handful. Thousands of cases, across cultures, many with details that were checked against records. When he retired the program did not close. His successor, Jim Tucker, is still running it in the same department.
The case Americans know is James Leininger, a boy who at two began having violent nightmares about a plane crash and describing himself as a fighter pilot shot down by the Japanese. Tucker published it in a peer-reviewed journal in 2016.
I want to be straight about that case rather than sell it to you. The primary investigators were the boy’s own parents, who later wrote a book about it, and that is a real weakness. A detailed critical re-examination was published, and Tucker answered it in print. That is a case being argued over properly, which is more than most of this subject gets, and it is also not a closed matter. Hold it loosely.
What I do not hold loosely is the pattern across the whole body of work. And it is not the part people quote.
The strongest finding is that it goes away
Across thousands of cases the researchers report the same arc. It starts around two or three. It is strongest before school. And by six to eight, it is gone. The child stops talking about it and then stops having it.
Every skeptic treats that as the giveaway. Kids make things up and then grow out of it.
But look at what the model predicts.
A small child is an instrument with almost no dampers installed. No fixed identity. No learned filters. Nothing yet that decides in advance what is worth hearing. The band is wide open, and a wide-open instrument does not just carry a tuning. It can briefly ring with content.
Then the dampers go in. Language, school, other people’s expectations, a self that has to be consistent to survive being around other selves. The instrument narrows. And what is left is what was always going to last: not the memories, the tuning.
So the memories fade at exactly the age the identity forms.
I did not build the model to explain that. It was already sitting in the data, reported by researchers who were not thinking about fields at all, and the model predicts it anyway. That is the moment I stopped treating this as a fun idea and started treating it as a theory.
It also means the ordinary version and the extreme version are the same phenomenon at different volumes. The child with the pilot’s name and the toddler who cannot be dragged away from the ocean are not two things. One instrument is just more open than the other.
And that gives me something I can be wrong about. If the fade is caused by an identity consolidating rather than by a birthday, then it should track the self and not the age. A child whose sense of being a separate someone forms late should hold it longer. A child whose forms early should lose it sooner. Nobody has checked that. If it came back flat, it would take a real bite out of this.
And yes, I have had one of these myself, on a psychedelic journey. A whole life, in detail, with the full weight of certainty behind it. I am not going to offer it to you as evidence. A chemical that reliably manufactures conviction is the worst possible witness, and I know better than to put it on the stand.
The strings that ring on their own
Which brings me back to the bar.
Go find a piano. Hold down the sustain pedal, the one on the right, so every damper lifts and all the strings are free.
Now sing one note into it.
The strings tuned to that note begin sounding on their own. Nobody touched them. No key was pressed. You can hear it happen, and if you have never done it, it is genuinely unsettling the first time. It is called sympathetic resonance and it is in every piano ever built.
That, I think, is what a medium is. Not someone with a special channel to somewhere else. An instrument built unusually open, with unusually few dampers, that starts sounding when something in the room is already sounding. The same openness a small child has, in a grown man who never lost it.
And here is the part that stopped me.
A sympathetic string does not know what struck the note.
It cannot tell you whether the sound came from a singer, or a violin, or another piano across the hall. It has no way to ask. It only knows something matching it was in the air, and it answered.
Which quietly dissolves both of the arguments that have paralyzed this entire subject for a hundred years.
Was Travis reading the grieving mother, or reading her son? Both are in the same air. Both will set a matching string ringing. There is no second location and nothing had to travel.
And was that little boy actually a pilot, or was he pulling a dead pilot’s life out of the field? In this model there is no difference between those two sentences. Being that pilot was never a location either. There is a pattern, and there is an instrument open enough to sound with it.
Both questions were built wrong. They both assumed the dead are somewhere else.
Why anything comes back at all
Which leaves the question I find I cannot stop thinking about.
If the field already holds every possibility, why would any of it bother coming down here? Why go through this? Why a body, why a childhood, why the whole expensive mess of a human life?
Because the field holds every possibility and has played almost none of them. Possibility is not experience. A song nobody has played is not a song yet.
So a band comes down into an instrument, gets played hard by a life it did not choose, and what goes back is something that did not exist before, anywhere, in any form.
And then it does it again. Not to fix you, and not because you failed the last one. Because there is more range in that band than one life can play, and the only way to find out what is in there is to take it out and use it.
Which means I should stop circling the word and say it.
Then this is reincarnation. Not as a religious claim, and not as anything you have to believe. As the thing you would expect, if the rest of it holds. Not a punishment. Not a wheel you are trying to escape. Not a test you keep failing and repeating until you finally pass. A pattern that was never finished, going back out to find out what else is in it.
That is the game. That is why you are here. Not to get it right. To get it played.
Which means four things at once
I want to name these separately, because they are usually treated as four different conversations and in this model they are one.
The soul. A persisting correlated pattern. Made of field, individuated by build and history, not located anywhere because the field is not located anywhere.
Reincarnation. Not a punishment and not a wheel. Just a pattern with more range in it than one life can use, going back out. And it explains the thing the reincarnation literature keeps reporting and cannot account for: why small children sometimes have it and always lose it.
The Akashic record. Every tradition that described a hall of records was answering the storage question with the vocabulary it had. If information is conserved and the field is the medium, then the record is not a library somewhere. It is the field, and you are standing in it. That is also, I think, the least crazy available explanation for what happened in that bar.
And the evolution of source. This is the biggest of the four and I want to say it carefully, because the wrong version loses half of you.
The field is not getting smarter. It was never missing information. Every possibility was always in there, which is exactly why it can be the ground of everything.
What it gains is actuality. Possibility is not experience. A song nobody has played is not a song yet. A unicorn is real in the imagined sense, and it was not real in any sense at all until somebody imagined one. So the field does not learn from your life. It becomes something it had never actually been, because you were the one holding that instrument, at that angle, on that night, and nobody has ever done that or will.
Which is a strange kind of responsibility to be handed. Nothing you do adds to what is possible. Everything you do adds to what has happened.
The couple in the back
I keep coming back to them.
Two people at the back of an old bar with sticky tables, who lost an eleven-year-old boy, and who raised their hands.
I cannot tell you what happened to them that night. I am convinced Travis was doing something. I am still not ready to say he was talking to their son, and I have made my peace with not finding out.
But here is what I can tell them.
He was here for eleven years. For eleven years there was an instrument in the world shaped exactly like him, and nothing before or since has been shaped that way. It got played. Some of it gently and some of it hard, the way all of them are. And every note went out into the air.
The air is still here. It is in that bar. It is in his mother. It is in the empty space at the back of the room where nobody was standing.
The instrument went back. It was always on loan.
But he was never the instrument. He was the music. And music does not go anywhere when the playing stops, because there is nowhere else for it to be.
That is not proof and I am not going to dress it up as proof. It is a theory, built entirely out of parts that already exist and are already published, that says nothing which was ever sounded is lost.
Science may have already explained the soul. It just has not noticed what it is holding.
PS: If any of this landed, the work underneath it is not theoretical. I spent years trying to reconcile the neuroscience I was reading with the spiritual experiences I was having. The brain said one thing. The body said another. And neither side seemed willing to admit the other existed.
What I have come to understand, through my own healing and through working with clients, is that the 'soul' is not a ghost in the machine. It is the informational architecture that organizes the machine. The brain is the translator, not the generator. The body is the phase-locked loop, not the source code.
I love that this article opens the door to that conversation without pretending to have all the answers. That is the kind of humility science needs more of.
